Work History

Social Work Intern

Triangle Disability and Autism Services
Morrisville, North Carolina
01.2025 - 05.2025
  • For my spring field placement I interned at Triangle Disability and Autism Services (TDAS), primarily spending my time at the day program. The day program is for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and autism, where adults are supported both individually and in groups while doing activities such as exercise, life skills classes, and cooking and nutrition classes, all while working on personal goals. At the day program, I provided direct support to participants throughout the day, including anything from understanding instructions to a task, to calming down when overwhelmed and upset. My priority was to provide support in whatever form it was needed.
  • Occasionally I worked with other TDAS programs, such as Supported Retirement, Project S.E.E (Supported Employment Experience, a program that employs high schoolers with IDD/autism, met with the mental health counselors, the human resources director and the compliance director, and helped with events. However, my primary responsibilities were at the building abilities day program, where I directly supported participants (adult individuals with IDD and/or autism), developed and taught vocational and civics lessons, took part in the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) workgroup, and worked on projects such as policy development, assessments, and participant goal setting with my supervisor.

Direct Support Professional

Triangle Disability and Autism Services
Morrisville, North Carolina
09.2025 - Current
  • My current responsibilities and priorities while working at the day program remain essentially the same as they were in my time as an intern. However, this position does not involve regularly working with programs outside of the day program, or projects for my supervisor. Each day I arrive to work committed to working with participants to achieve their goals. Grow their independence, and build their confidence.

  • I worked as a one on one counselor for campers of all ages with special needs.
  • Needs among campers have included (but not been limited to): severe ADHD, autism, apraxia, G.I issues, and fetal alcohol syndrome.
  • I assisted kids in daily activities such as games, physical support, eating, daily life skills, socializing, and emotional regulation.
  • I also worked to modify activities to be more accommodating to their needs. My ultimate goal in this job was to give campers an intrusive and integrated experience that made them feel embraced and supported. It was also important to me to build solid connections with their parents and assuring them through my actions, that their children were in good hands.

Nanny for special needs teenager

GT Independence
Carrboro
08.2023 - 03.2024
  • I worked as a nanny for a 17 year old boy on the Autism Spectrum, and with Bardet-Biedl syndrome.
  • My responsibilities included transporting him to and from school, feeding him and assisting him in using the restroom, washing hands, and completing other daily activities.
  • I also accompanied him to his occupational therapy appointments, took him on walks, worked with him through meltdowns, and practiced school skills with him.
  • I eventually resigned from this job in order to focus on school.
  • Managed schedules, ensuring timely transportation to appointments and activities.
  • Created an atmosphere of trust between myself and both the family and the young man I cared for.
