Classroom Teacher

Sparhawk Lower School
Amesbury, MA
08.2005 - 06.2023
  • The small size and flexible schedule at the Sparhawk Lower School kept me challenged and dynamic in the 18 years that I was employed there
  • During that time, I was the classroom teacher for multi-age classes (2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 2-3-4, etc); team teacher for community learning events (usually grades 1-5) based on our annual academic theme; weekly enrichment workshops for grades 1-5 on Friday afternoons (e.g
  • Drama, athletics, cooking, art, nature studies); the weekly Pizza business (5th grad student-run project based-learning); and weekly after-school clubs (LEGO club and running club)
  • The type of student drawn into the Sparhawk environment was fascinating
  • Many students had qualities of ADHD or ASD, but also strong academic ability because students did not have access to special services
  • We simply provided a small teacher to student ratio and a focus on project-based or discussion-based curriculum with frequent movement breaks and loads of outdoor time on our wooded campus
  • Very often, this was enough to calm anxious children and allow them to access skills they didn't know they had! I really enjoyed the variety of individuals that came to our little school - many of them reminded me of ME when I was their age! I also played an integral role in the school's accreditation process, both by visiting other independent schools as a volunteer team, and as a member of the steering committee for Sparhawk's own accreditation committee visit
  • By being a vital part of the accreditation process, I could ensure that my practice reflected the high standards required for a school to successfully educate young students in this modern age
  • Working at an independent school like Sparhawk afforded me so many opportunities to grow as a professional
  • If I could create it, I could implement it, as long as time and cost were not prohibitive
  • Creativity and enthusiasm were qualities encouraged not only in the students, but the teachers and staff as well
