I have taught within a Title 1 school in a Special Education Structured Learning Classroom to a Life Skills Classroom over the last 13 years. During this time I was able to lead a team of 18 members. Each year, I have managed and supervised anywhere from 12 to 22 students on my caseload, 5 to 6 paraprofessionals, and multiple therapists in and out of my classroom. These students ranged from a wide variety of mental, emotional, physical, and learning disabilities. I helped assess students’ skills in which to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans. I would create and develop IEPs for each student on my caseload. I would plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities. I would also teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one, depending on the needs of each child. I would implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress. I would hold ARD meetings, and update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals. I would also discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators. I have mentored five teacher candidates, who have now successfully completed their course work for bachelor’s degrees in teaching. I would prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and into the community.
