Work History

Biomass-derived Green Polyurethane Foam

SUNY-ESF
06.2022 - Current
  • Leading Department of Energy (DOE) ARPA-E Project for Lignin-derived Carbon Storing Foams for High-Performance Insulation, total of $ 2.5 million awarded
  • Developed green lignin-derived polyurethane foam with high R-value (~6 per inch) with high compression strength (15-33 psi).
  • Reduced total carbon footprint for lignin-derived polyurethane production.
  • Collaborated with teams, including universities (UTK, UCR, CAU) and industry partners (BASF), to ensure seamless project completion.

Biomass Pretreatment and Kinetic Modeling

SUNY-ESF
01.2021 - 01.2024
  • Developed high-efficiency biomass/lignin pretreatment methods and catalysts.
  • Characterized products and processed results including thermal and structural properties using GPC, NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, TGA, and DSC.
  • Collaborated with other universities (Texas A&M) and well communicated with other teams.

Fabrication of Hydrogel and Aerogel From Waste

SUNY-ESF
01.2018 - 01.2021
  • Synthesized aerogel with low density and high mechanical strength from wastes including pizza boxes and rejected fibers from our paper industry collaborator (West Rock) .

Paper Coating and Sizing Agent Development

SCUT
01.2016 - 01.2017
  • Tested different new coating and sizing agents including modified starch and modified ADK.
  • Improved paper performance including tensile strength, brightness, hydrophobicity, etc.
