Job overview

As the only Infusion Medical Assistant in an outpatient clinic, I take on a wide range of responsibilities between administrative and clinical hands-on patient tasks.

  • Assisted with chemotherapy treatments by preparing medications, priming IV lines and wrapping sterile treatment, lab & pump kits.
  • Performed blood draws, urine collections, Covid & HCG testing prior to infusions.
  • Administered intramuscular & subcutaneous Injections.
  • Assisted physicians with biopsies & tissue collection, then packaged biological specimens for testing.
  • Responsible for scheduling all clinical infusion appointments (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, injections, phlebotomy, and non-oncology infusions) As well as follow up appointments for post-treatment checkups or lab work as directed by physicians.
  • Verified patient insurance coverage and obtained authorizations for treatment.
  • Ordered and stocked supplies for the infusion department according to established protocols.
  • Relayed messages from patients to physicians about concerns, condition updates or refill requests to facilitate treatment.
  • Monitored vital signs during infusions and reported any abnormalities to nurses.
  • Maintaining a clean work area by properly disposing used medical supplies and cleaning infusion chairs.
  • Provided emotional support to patients undergoing cancer treatment or in remission.
  • Coordinated with Pharmaceutical Representatives from external companies to provide physicians & patients educational materials about cancer treatment, prevention, and detection methods to at-risk individuals in the community. (Pfizer, G360, BMS, Merck, Bristol-Myers, Etc.)

Emergency Protocol as Infusion MA

  • ALWAYS prepared to take action when a patient is experiencing a chemo reaction by immediately running vitals, emergency medications, oxygen tank, AED and CPR Backboard.
  • Documenting reaction time, symptoms and dosages of medications administered. I alert an on site physician, the pharmacist, and if necessary, calling Emergency Medical Services.
  • In the cases that i had to call EMS, If i am not actively on standby to provide CPR or draw up medications, i will gather patient information such as their current treatment plan, roadmaps, medications, facesheet, contact information, reaction documentation, and any personal belongings to send with EMS.
  • After reactions have either stabilized or escalated, i usually notify the patients emergency contact number & an on site manager.
