Summary - Unit Summary

  • 1, Stereotype threat is when someone feels nervous or pressured because they are worried about becoming a negative stereotype about their group. One way to reduce stereotype threat is by telling students that a test has shown no differences in performance among different groups. This can help reduce pressure and make students feel more confident while taking the test.
  • 2, A, The central route to persuasion happens when someone carefully thinks about the information and arguments before changing their opinion on the topic. The peripheral route to persuasion happens when someone is influenced by things that are not related to the actual message, such as the attractiveness of the speaker., B, People are more likely to be persuaded by the central route when the topic is important to them, or their family and friends, and they are paying attention and thinking carefully about the information., C, Someone is more persuaded by the peripheral route when the topic is not very important to them or when they do not want to spend time thinking deeply. Instead, they may be influenced by things like the speaker's appearance or perhaps their popularity.
  • 3, A, One factor that can make someone more likely to conform is self-esteem. People with lower self-esteem may be more likely to conform because they might doubt their own opinions and look to others for guidance. This can make them more likely to change their behavior to match the group to feel better about themselves as well as more likeable among their in-group., B, One factor that can make someone less likely to conform is obedience. If a person does not automatically obey authority figures and instead thinks for themselves, they may be less likely to change their behavior just to follow what others in the group are doing., C, The foot-in-the-door technique is when someone first asks for a small request that is easy to agree to, and then later asks for a bigger request. After saying yes to the first request, people are more likely to agree to the second one. For example, I could first ask someone if they would sign a petition for a local cause. A few hours after they agree, I might then ask if they would volunteer for a few hours to help support the cause, because they already said yes to the small request; they may be more likely to agree to the bigger one.
