Martha began working in the HIV field seventeen years ago as an outreach volunteer in San Diego, CA where she provided information to the community about HIV testing as well as other services available persons living with HIV/AIDS. Martha began working at Christies Place as a Family Case Worker in 2010 and became a Peer Navigator with the Change for Women Program in 2011. Martha was recently promoted to Peer Navigation Program Coordinator and leads a group of five peer navigators. Together, they ensure that clients have access to vital resources such as case management, transportation, mental health counseling, medical care and other supportive services.

  • Responsible for conducting outreach to women at designated partner agencies and other locations where there is a high probability of reaching HIV infected women who are newly diagnosed or who have fallen out of care.
  • Re-engaging women of diverse background who have fallen out of care through: outreach, telephone follow up with clients who do not make their primary care appointments, follow up with primary care providers, helping clients make appointments or helping them make their own appointments and making appointments reminder calls. Responsible for facilitating referrals to core and support services as needed.
  • I prepare and distribute women's culturally specific resource materials and/or other information about HIV services.
  • I conduct assessments of client's need for primary care/treatment and/or supportive services, early intervention/diagnosis information, peer based counseling, information based and hand-in-hand assistance in accessing appropriate services.
  • I assist the front desk and screen telephone calls, responding to inquiries for service, and for interpreting Peer Navigator services to the community.
