Summary

Organized and results-oriented. Excels at seeing big picture and coming up with innovative solutions, alternatives or compromises, to meet multiple resource objectives. Adept at leveraging data-driven insights and implementing proactive solutions to deliver the best results. Possesses strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.

With respect to volunteering after retirement for the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office: I have a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the Ridgecrest Field Office and I have the backcountry and specifically, wilderness skills to safely navigate the field office on my own or to help others do so.

I am very interested in seeing the Russian thistle project succeed. The Range Specialist and I have been collaborating on this project for years and I would like to continue working with the Range Specialist on expanding weed inventories and on volunteer mechanical removal projects.

I was not able to get all of the data, particularly photos, I've collected over 25 years of work, all sorted and organized so they can be found and made useful before I retired. I don't think anyone else can do this or do it as easily, identify where the photo was taken and what its significance is. I would like to volunteer to do this and finish the job!

Work History

Outdoor Recreation Planner/Wilderness Specialist

DOI-BLM-Ridgecrest Field Office
06.2001 - 03.2024
  • I provided Wilderness imput and analysis into internally and externally generated projects in the Ridgecrest Field Office for more than 20 years as part of the NEPA team, responsible for writing and responding to CXs, DNAs, EAs, and EISs. Eventually I also assumed responsibility for VRM and Weeds, and on an as-needed basis for ACECs and NLCS. I've participated and contributed to several BLM management plan amendments, WEMO, NEMO, and the DRECP, over the course of my career. I've inventoried the entire Ridgecrest Field Office for Lands with Wilderness Character as part of these efforts.
  • I coordinated a very successful wilderness restoration program for 20 years, encouraging volunteerism, innovation, and breaking new ground with respect to use of more effective camouflage techniques (vertical mulch) and erosion control measures (sterile rice straw bales, rock check dams) and use of hard vehicle barriers (fences and boulders) where needed. I initiated the move from spot treatments across multiple wilderness areas to comprehensive wilderness-specific one wilderness at a time restoration planning and execution.
  • I initiated, led or co-led several large wilderness restoration projects including the Trona Community cleanup of Great Falls Basin, the Blue Rock Mill Site AML remediation, and the Chris Wicht Camp Fire and Hazard remediation.
  • As co-weed coordinator, I developed three very effective volunteer tamarisk removal projects, sustaining them on an annual basis for several years, in Surprise and Happy canyons, in selected canyons in the Argus Range, and in the wet canyons of the eastern Inyo Mountains out of Saline Valley. More recently, I initiated the Russian thistle project at the South Oasis Windmill site, wrote the EA, helped build the fence, and have participated in subsequent mechanical and chemical treatments at the site, in partnership with the Range Specialist.
  • I also spearheaded and coordinated two substantial cultural resource protection projects: stabilization/rehabilitation of the Beveridge Ridge Cabin and fire hazard remediation of the Salt Tram, both in remote locations in the Inyo Mountains Wilderness.
