• Templates: Although resume templates are readily available, easy to use, and appealing to the creator's eyes, they are not recommended, especially when downloading or emailing a resume to an employer. Many larger companies use a resume reader that does not read columns, boxes, lines, colors, and other creative items on resumes. Applicant scanning software often unable to read information presented in a template or table. Due to the time it takes to read through resumes, employers often prefer a traditional style resume that presents the candidates most relevant skills and experiences in an easy-to-read format. Creating your own resume while using keywords in the industry shows originality, creativity, and is less likely to get overlooked by resume readers. If you are applying for a job in a creative industry, consider using a standard resume when you apply online, but bring your more creative resume to hand to interviewer during the interview process.
