Research Experience

University of Colorado Medical Center, Anschutz                              06/01/2023-08/05/2023

Research topic: Intersection of p53 and XPO7 pathway in breast cancer

  • Cell culture of cancer cell lines
  • Used qRT-PCR with 3 different primers to knockdown specific protein (XPO7) expression levels
  • Extracted proteins from cancer cell lines and run western blot to determine protein expression level
  • Run x-gal staining to evaluate level of senescence in both wild type and knock down cancer cell lines
  • Performed sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay in knockdown and WT cancer cell lines to measure cell growth in response to specific treatment.
  • Conducted an annexin V-FITC assay to measure level of apoptosis in cancer cell lines.
  • Poster presentation at university of Colorado Medical campus on Intersection of p53 and XPO7 pathway in breast cancer

Hardin Simmons University, Abilene                                     09/20/2023- date

Research topic: Determining organic contents levels in soil samples using Loss On Ignition (LOI)

  • Crushed 14 soil samples into powdered form
  • Heated soil samples at different temperatures (100, 550 and 1000 degree celsius) to determine weight loss of water and carbon matter.
  • Injected soil extract into 15 mL Falcon tube containing a reaction mixture and incubated for specific amount of time at field temperature.
  • Transferred the contents of soil extracts to a PMMA disposable cuvette and the absorbance at 360 nm is taken for each soil sample using a photometer.
  • Prepared a calibration curve and and compared the absorbance at 360 nm of each sample to that standard curve and using the linear regression equation of the standard curve, the inorganic phosphate content of each soil sample was calculated.

Accomplishments

  • Awarded Welch Foundation grant as Research Assistant in researching the amount of organic content in different soil samples using the Loss On Ignition (LOI) method.
  • Recipient of best Chemistry/Physics Student in Holland School of Sciences & Mathematics Scholarship (April 2022)
  • Recognized as an outstanding counselor in Marjorie Lee Browne STEM fellowship in pursuit of equal education within STEM disciplines in Memphis,TN, (June 2022)
  • President's List 6 semesters in a row [Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023 ]
  • Poster presentation at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Southwestern Regional Meeting, Oklahoma-November 2023
  • Academic tutor for General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Genetics, Physics and Calculus- Hardin Simmons University
