- Administered medications and treatments accurately, ensuring patient safety and adherence to protocols. Specifically, I learned the use of monoject pumps for initiating enteral feedings. This included adding fortifier to mom and donor breast milk in order to achieve the prescribed dose of nutrition for the nenonate. I was able to insert NG/Og tubes while using a clean technique, aspirating/auscultating/measuring to ensure proper location.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing care by consistently striving for improvement and seeking feedback from colleagues, mentors, and supervisors. The NICU team at NCH allowed me to be a part of rounds with the neonatologist, charge nurse, pharmacist, and respiratory therapist. This experience every shift allowed me to be a part of interprofessional communication and ask questions to experienced health care providers in order to gain knowledge on care plans.
- Communicated effectively with patients' families fostering trust as well as advocating for them in the face of stress and difficulties.
- Being in the NICU I was able to be a part of critical care. This included being included in cesarean delivery where the neonatal team was required, assisting in a neonatal hypoglycemic episode, and adjusting CPAP/oxygen devices. The NICU team taught me how to use IV pumps, administer TPN/lipids into a central line using sterile technique, and proper documentation of NAS with a FInnegan score.
