Solar Array Installation and Electrical Basics

IBT120
Atlanta
06.2026 - Current
  • During my training, I learned that solar array attachment mounts are secured to the roof using lag screws. I learned that flashing is installed to help shed water away from roof penetrations and mounting points, preventing leaks and protecting the roof. Flashings and rails are available in both black and clear finishes depending on the project requirements.I learned that CRRA stands for Comp Rail Roof Attachment, which is used to securely attach the racking system to the roof. Solar modules are attached to the rails using mid clamps and end clamps to keep the panels secure. Racking assemblies are attached and aligned using the proper mounting hardware and installation procedures. When applying sealant around flashing during a roof installation, the sealant should be applied in the proper pattern recommended by the manufacturer to create a watertight seal and prevent water intrusion.I also learned that LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient type of light bulb commonly used today. In electrical training, I learned that wire size is measured using the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system. The higher the AWG number, the smaller the wire, and the lower the AWG number, the larger and thicker the wire.I learned that electrical wires are often color-coded, with red typically used for positive conductors in DC systems and black commonly used for negative conductors. Finally, I learned that NEC stands for the National Electrical Code, which provides the safety standards and requirements for electrical installations in the United States. These lessons helped me better understand solar array installation, roof attachment systems, electrical components, and industry safety standards.

Construction Basics and Solar 101

IBT120
Atlanta
05.2026 - Current
  • During Construction Basics and Solar 101, I learned that the main components of a grid-tied solar system are the solar array, inverter, and service panel. I learned that a stud finder is one of the best tools for locating studs behind drywall. I also learned that monocrystalline solar panels are generally the most efficient type of solar panel and that BOS stands for Balance of System, which includes all the components of a solar installation besides the solar panels themselves.I learned that most roofs are framed at 24 inches on center (OC) and that if I find any damage or safety concerns on a roof, I should notify my supervisor immediately. In orientation and safety training, I learned that hard hats must be worn at all times on job sites. If someone yells “headache,” it means an object is falling from above, and I should move to safety rather than look up.I learned that there is nothing but my own awareness to prevent me from stepping off the edge of a roof, so I must stay alert at all times. I also learned the proper ladder safety ratio of 4:1, meaning the ladder should be placed 1 foot away from the structure for every 4 feet of height. Extension ladders should extend at least 3 feet above the roof edge, and when stepping from a ladder onto a roof, I should remain connected to a safe fall-protection system whenever required.I learned that fossil fuels are nonrenewable energy sources, while solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are renewable energy sources. I also learned that climate change is influenced by human activities and that many people choose solar energy because it can help save money and reduce negative environmental impacts. Most importantly, I learned that while working on a job site, I should treat teammates, supervisors, and homeowners with respect, communicate effectively, and always put safety before speed. These lessons have helped me build a strong foundation in both construction and solar energy practices.
