  • Create and review daily death notifications for Veterans who died at the John D Dingell VA Medical Center and within Community Hospitals or nursing home settings
  • Verifies information as to the date and time of death with the medical providers
  • Inquires with the previous unit where the Veteran was held and assists in overseeing the death certificate by getting it completed by the medical provider
  • Checks with AOD for death certificates that may have been sent to the Emergency Room overnight and retrieves those death certificates
  • Greets veteran next of kin, decision maker and/or significant others who present to the office for decedent affairs information and assistance
  • Maintains a log of VBA, NCA, and local funeral home points of contacts
  • Maintains close working relationships with Veteran Benefits Administration representatives and National Cemetery Administration representatives and serves as the primary point of contact for coordination of services between the NCA, VHA and VBA
  • Keeps up to date on VBA and NCA policy and procedures and ensures JDDVAMC Decedent Affairs program follows applicable VA rules and regulations
  • Prepares and maintains resources, paperwork, and forms for decedent affairs information packets to provide NOKs at times of death
  • Provides education and information to all customers concerning end-of-life planning, including death, burial, and funeral benefits and options
  • Electronic Death Certificate Coordinator
  • Create service letters for funeral homes to obtain military honors
  • Coordinate the cancellation of remaining schedules for each patient that has died
  • Utilize VISTA, CPRS, VBMS, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
