Research

During the summer of 2023, my research focused on understanding how nature forms the unique endoperoxide bridge found in artemisinin, a compound long used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat malaria. This endoperoxide is critical to the drug’s effectiveness, as it reacts with iron inside malaria-infected cells to generate free radicals that kill the parasite. Our lab studied the biosynthetic pathway using dihydroartemisinic acid (DHA) as a precursor to investigate the chemical steps leading to endoperoxide formation.
