Morning shifts
Start off by preparing vitamins for the animals that can eat whole fish of any size.
Vitamins are placed within the fishes gills and given to each of the pinnipeds unless specified not to give them. Regular feeding is done at this time as well.
While the pinnipeds are eating we are monitoring which are eating in which are not eating for the veterinarian.
Thaw out the next batch of food for the afternoon.
Thawing consist of opening boxes of herring fish and separating them by size. Buckets of large fish go in one bucket and medium/small and another bucket together.
Once all fish are thawed cleaning of the kitchen and dishes is next. Aseptic in disinfected techniques are used during cleaning.
For the anti-septic technique that is used we place the feeding tubes into a bowl of Clorohexedine to be sanitized and then rinsed out within 15 minutes.
Disinfected techniques that is used in the kitchen area is Dawn soap and a disinfected called comet with bleach. The comment will sit for 10 minutes and then everything will be rinsed down.
Gruel also will be made for isolation patients. This consist of weighing out fish cutting off heads and tail and placing them into a separate bucket to go into the blender. Ingredients that go into the gruel are; herring fish, cooking oil, multivitamin, water, fish oil, and resorb. This is all blended until it is liquid with no chunks.
Afternoon shift
Similar to what we did in the morning just without the vitamins we feed all pinnipeds and monitor which ones are eating and which ones are not.
Purpose that are in isolation get fed through assistance feeding or force-feeding using tubes.
Once all pinnipeds are finished eating this is the time to record their activity into their files.
Records are kept in numerical order by year end by tag Records are kept in numerical order by year end by tag assignment.
Then vitamins are prepared for the next day. We have to make sure that we correctly count how many pinnipeds are in each pen and that are getting vitamins.

Learned how to take vitals using the TPR (temperature, pulse, and respiratory) method. Temperature was taken using a thermometer that has enough lubricant to make it more comfortable to slide in and out of the rectum. Pulse and respiratory taken using either a stethoscope and or hand. When taken either looking at a clock for 6 seconds and multiplying by 10 will help to demand an estimate.
Applied my restraining skills learned from my VA program for veterinarian, vet tech, vaccines, drawing blood using either the jugular, cephalic, or saphenous veins, and for cystocentesis.
Was taught how to run blood and urine through the IDEXX machine provided at their facility.
Running blood requires using either green top tube or a purple top.
Running urinalysis requires changing the needle to keep urine as sterile as possible and transferring the urine that was taken from cystocentesis into two white top tubes. Using the IDEXX machine provided by the facility I was taught how to run three different test a UA, UA analyzer, and SediVue.
Drawing up vaccinations such as rabies, CIV, Bordetella, Dhpp, Dap, Feliv.
Drawing up vaccines that need to be reconstituted such as Bordetella.
Clean the facility such as the kennels, floors, leashes, exam tables.
Properly cleaning the surgical instruments by soaking them in diluted chlorohexidine, scrubbing the blood off them, placing them in instrument milk, and laying them to dry.
Restocking supplies as they are used throughout the day.
