A legal nurse consultant (LNC) is usually a registered nurse who acts as a legal consultant on medical issues in lawsuits. LNCs work with law firms (or human resource managers) on a case-by-case basis to review medical records and patient medical treatment to determine merit in the case present. An LNC is a medical detective.
LNCs can educate attorneys about standards of medical treatment, explain medical procedures, and assist with discovery requests, deposition questions, and selection of expert witnesses.
A legal nurse consultant is a medical professional with legal training, like a registered nurse.
According to the American Bar Association, [or ABA states that] legal nurse consultants are a subspecialty of the legal field, not the medical field, and are a type of paralegal, not a separate profession.
The American Board of Nursing Specialties recognizes legal nurse consultants (LNCs) and imposes some rigorous standards on LNCs.
