Supply Chain Senior Manager Sourcing

Union Pacific Railroad
03.2013 - 11.2023
  • Primary duties were the specification review, sourcing and purchase of Union Pacific's extensive and very specialized vehicle and trailer fleet inventory to achieve a best-in-class service and operation for internal customers. This encompassed an annual strategic replacement strategy to purchase between 400-500 new vehicles with a targeted annual budget of $75M. I managed this annual budget by confirming monthly supplier invoices were trending in predetermined forecast to ensure the allocated annual budget would meet it's spend goal by the end of the fiscal year. In addition, I managed all non-catalog procurement requests and specification validation for specialized fleet purchases and contracts.
  • In the Supply Chain Vehicle Fleet category, I was the primary point of contact for everything fleet related, including but not limited to, vehicle and trailer specifications, operation use, regulations, compliance, technology, inventory, accidents, market analysis, remarketing and supplier support. I worked directly with the dedicated contract employees from our vehicle fleet management support staff (Holman), primary vehicle upfitter (Auto Truck) as well as all secondary fleet upfitters. Overall goal was to support all of Union Pacific's user groups to decrease downtime, increase productivity and ensure the safe operation and management of all user group fleets.

Engineering W/E Supervisor I

Union Pacific Railroad
05.2001 - 03.2013
  • In the role of W/E Supervisor at the Denver M/W Shop my primary duties included the organization and transportation of railroad equipment, vehicles, trailers and materials for all of the Track Program groups and Service Units. I managed eighteen long-haul drivers and coordinated various types of transportation moves in the 23 states UP operates. This included overflow move requests that involved the coordination and support with UP's Logistics Management System (LMS). In addition to the production move requests, I was also responsible for the transportation and inventory management of surplus assets sold at various auctions on and off Union Pacific property.
  • I was solely in charge of the comercial drivers work assignments, payroll, budget, safety, inventory, training, development and specification of new vehicle and trailer orders. I oversaw all vehicle affairs from preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, fuel cards/PIN's, driver qualifications and all of the necessary paperwork each employee required to operate safely and legally in each state that was traveled. My employee's budget was tied with the Denver Shop and I worked with the shop Budget Manager to comply with monthly and annual budget goals. This was accomplished by monitoring employee's bi-monthly payroll, VISA expenses and using Holman's (formerly ARI) resource site to review the fixed (lease, licensing) and operating costs (maintenance, accidents, tires, fuel).

Engineering Track Program

Union Pacific Railroad
07.1993 - 05.2001
  • Railroad career started in the Cheyenne yard with Engineering Track Programs - Northern Region and worked in various production work groups, including Rail, Curve, Tie and In-track Welding. In these groups I held various roles from CDL driver, timekeeper, assistant foreman, foreman and material foreman. With these experiences, specifically as a material foreman, it provided the knowledge of the railroads infrastructure and the materials needed to build and maintain its operations. This also gave me the field experience working in multiple states throughout the UP network.
  • With the Class B commercial driver's license, including hazardous and passenger endorsements, I gained the experience in identifying track material and how to properly load, secure, transport and unload various vehicle types, flatcars and gondolas. This was instrumental early in my career as the railroad and its operations were unknown to me. The role as a material foreman had many duties, specifically monitoring monthly budget, employees payroll and maintaining the inventory, ordering and assignment of track materials to track projects.
