- During Nursing school, I did my capstone in a Medsurg/Telemetry unit at Lonepeak Hospital. This setting allowed me to care for patients with complex, acute, and chronic conditions. I cared for patients with bowel disorders, respiratory conditions, post-operative complications, sepsis, diabetes, renal issues, that required continuous monitoring and coordinated care.
I developed stronger assessment skills, learning how subtle changes in vital signs, mental status, and neurological assessments.
Throughout my capstone, I prioritized safe medication administration, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. I also gained some experience with IV medications, post-surgical monitoring, and charting on Epic, as well as practicing SBAR post shift.
Most importantly, this experience helped me transition from thinking like a student to functioning more like a graduate nurse. I improved my prioritization, delegation, and communication skills while building confidence in handling a full patient assignment. My time in the Med-Surg/Telemetry unit reinforced the importance of critical thinking, teamwork, and compassionate care in promoting positive patient outcomes.
