While interning at Brave Step, an organization that gives voices and therapy to women who are survivors of sexual assault and violence, I created a program to help our clients to connect with resources, services, or communities to support them on their healing journey. We helped find therapists, transportation, medical services, or support groups tailored to their needs, as well as values. We had great success with this program, and it is a program that is still currently being utilized and expanded on.
Samaritan's Shoes was a program I collaborated with one of my peers on in conjunction with Samaritian's Purse, who give clothes, books, and other household and personal items to people in need. Samaritan's shoes focused on collecting the item that is least donated, which is shoes. We collected over twenty thousand pairs of shoes in December from all over North Carolina, and were able to provide all age groups with shoes for Christmas, and the upcoming year.
Heaven's Haven was a program I co-founded with one of my peers in remembrance of our friend Heaven, who passed from a fatal car accident due to a drunk driver. Our program aimed to provide information and resources to K-8 students on alcohol and substance abuse, as well as the dangers of driving under the influence. We spoke at thirty schools within North Carolina over the span of a year.
Hug-a-Roo aimes to provide new stuffed animals to children who have experienced a life-threatening illness, traumatic event or are at risk. I volunteered with this organization and developed communication, as well as organization skills and learned the value of empathy and care.
I volunteered at Grier Gardens as a leader for students who were doing gardening or hydroponics as a part of their class or as an afterschool volunteer activity. We developed and fostered our gardening and communication skills.
