Job Summary
The CI Operator is responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and coordinating operational support for CTX/X-ray baggage screening systems and baggage handling system (BHS) issues across airport terminals. The role involves responding to machine faults, communicating with controllers and technicians, verifying machine performance, assisting with troubleshooting procedures, and coordinating ticket/work order requests through authorized channels.
Key Responsibilities
CTX/X-Ray System Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Monitor CTX/X-ray machine status and performance in real time.
- Identify and respond to machine faults and irregularities including:Startup timeout
Failed calibration
Heat exchanger faults
Flaw faults
Device missing errors
Detector failures
Bad or incomplete images
Image lagging/delays
Bag jams
Bad pixels
Failed IQT
Gantry not spinning
Motion control failures
Communication errors
Conveyor/off-track image issues
Bag edge detection malfunctions
SDS library failures
CTX not accepting bags
- Determine whether issues are caused by the CTX machine or BHS system using HMI monitoring and operational indicators.
- Perform troubleshooting procedures such as:Fault resets (F/R)

Reboots
Auto resets
- Escalate issues and open work orders/tickets when troubleshooting limits are exceeded or faults persist.
Ticketing & Escalation
- Follow established SOPs regarding:When to open tickets/work orders
Acceptable number of resets/reboots
Failed IQT thresholds
Excessive auto-reset conditions
- Obtain authorization from TSACC before opening tickets.
- Coordinate with TSARC agents for ticket creation and escalation.
- Maintain communication with technicians regarding unresolved machine faults and operational irregularities.
Communication & Coordination
- Serve as the communication point for CTX/X-ray operational issues.
- Coordinate with:TSA personnel
Terminal controllers (T1, T2, T3, International Terminal)
BHS operators and contractors
Airline representatives
SFO Tech personnel
Smiths Detection technicians
- Request assistance from controllers for bag removal, belt resets, or conveyor clearing during bag jams and cascades.
- Provide machine status updates and answer CTX-related inquiries.
Machine Testing & Verification
- Verify IQT and calibration results after flights and maintenance activities.
- Confirm whether X-ray machine LP status passes or fails through CI MUX systems.
- Coordinate with technicians during preventive maintenance (PM) and repair activities.
- Monitor repeated IQT failures and determine escalation requirements.
Reporting & Operational Support
- Record and maintain bag count data for all X-ray machines at designated intervals (approximately 12 PM and 12 AM daily).
- Monitor baggage flow and identify abnormalities such as all bags diverting to inspection rooms.
- Document operational issues, machine downtime, and troubleshooting actions.
Required Skills & Qualifications

- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Familiarity with airport operational procedures and escalation protocols.
