  • Develop and implement treatment plans for patients with various levels of spinal cord injury during their inpatient rehab stay in order to prepare them for a safe discharge to home.
  • Train family members and caregivers on using proper body mechanics and efficient techniques to care for their family member with a spinal cord injury.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to discuss barriers to interventions, bowel/bladder routines, medical updates, insurance coverage for equipment, plan for home modifications and ensure the patient is ready for discharge.
  • Evaluate power wheelchairs and bathroom equipment, participate in fittings, write prescriptions/letters of medical necessity, and educate patients on how to operate this equipment.
  • Establish rapport with individual's after a traumatic change in their life in order to incorporate their goals and meaningful occupations into daily treatment sessions.

  • Co-lead adjust classes at Craig Hospital for individual's with tetraplegic level spinal cord injuries- power wheelchair skills class and an education class lead by past patients from Craig who are now living at home, working, and re-integrated in the community. 
  • Contribute to the reserach and writing of a paper on the "Advances in Cervical Spinal Cord Injury" with fellow therapists and physicians at Craig Hospital and Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. 
  • Participate in research on the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab BRAIN (Battery of Rehab Assessments and Interventions). Review literature for common assessments and interventions, develop summaries of each literature review to provide clinicians with quick access to most recent evidence. 
  • Represent Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in project collaborations with Northwestern University engineering students to develop innovative adaptive equipment for patients.
