The CCC teams up with CAL FIRE and the Bureau of Land Management to run firefighting hand crews. Corpsmembers build fire lines, set hose, and help extinguish wildland fires. They also work on wildfire prevention by clearing vegetation, creating fuel breaks, and assisting with prescribed burns. Crews handle local incidents and may be deployed anywhere in the state.
Corpsmembers are expected to perform physically demanding and repetitive trail work safely for 40 hours each week, spanning over five months. Daily hikes can cover up to 30 miles, navigating steep mountainous terrain to reach various project sites, while carrying gear and heavy tools weighing up to 60 pounds. Tasks include clearing fallen trees from trails, brushing overgrown paths, repairing trail surfaces damaged by erosion, rerouting trails to protect sensitive ecosystems, and constructing trail structures from stone and timber using basic tools such as hammers, rock bars, handsaws, axes, shovels, and physical strength. Corpsmembers will also learn to work around stock animals, meet partner agency work quality standards, and perform job hazard analyses.
