GUIDED CLINICAL OBSERVATION

Rehab Tech RA: Sweet Pea’s Therapy

  • September 9, 2025 through November 20, 2025
  • Located in Davenport, IA
  • Offers multiple different therapy types including physical, occupational, and speech therapies
  • I am an intern for their ECAP program, where I will gain over 75 hours of experience from speech therapy sessions. I will have hands-on experience with the children enrolled: making sure they stay on task for different speech therapy activities and also leading the academic center - working on skills like color, shape, number recognition, sensory integration, and staying on task.

RESEARCH

BIOL-199

  • Researched bees and if they were attracted to certain colored plants
  • Hypothesis: Brighter colored flowers will attract more bees
  • Found that bees could only pick up 3 different colors

BIOL-200

  • Researched slugs and their attraction to food with different acidities
  • Hypothesis: Slugs will be more attracted to higher-level citrus fruits because they are more potent
  • Found that the slugs were more attracted to less acidic foods

BIOL-211

  • Ran an experiment testing two different face washes to see which face wash was more effective in killing acne-causing bacteria
  • Hypothesis: The cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide would be more effective in stunting the growth of the acne-causing bacteria.
  • PanOxyl (contains benzoyl peroxide) and Clean and Clear (no benzoyl peroxide) were tested
  • Results showed Clean and Clear did a better job at initially killing acne-causing bacteria than PanOxyl

BIOL-300

  • Conducted a research proposal about how the bacteria in our gut could potentially be a reasoning for the increased cases of autism/neurodivergence.
  • Hypothesis: An increased diversity of bacteria living within an individual’s gut would lessen the likelihood of having a neurological disorder.
  • This was a hypothetical paper because we do not have the funds to do the project, so I made up data showing what would happen if my hypothesis was correct. To do this, I made many different tables and diagrams showing different data points, highlighting the fact that if a mouse had a higher amount of diverse bacteria residing in their gut, their behavior would show that they are acting quote-on-quote normal for a normally neurologically functioning mouse. To know the behaviors of a neurologically normal mouse compared to a not normal neurologically functioning mouse, I had to look up key behavioral differences between the two.
