I started working when I was 12 years old as my Dads assistant I would go with him to court and sit up with the judge. Unless i was left to sit outside the court house with the car double parked which was always such a crisis because i didn't know how to drive stick shifts so I couldn't move to the car if someone came anyways. I just remember always feeling special and then when i was alone in the car id be so scared because i was on the Grand Concourse which is a really bad neighborhood. I remember my dad was doing a homicide case and he had just gotten his last 7 homicide cases acquitted and i was the only person sitting on my dad's clients side of the court room bc he was a criminal lawyer. ANd the victims family girlfriend was crying saying all hector ever said was hhow much he loved jose thats all he said was that he loved his father more than anything. So Hector killed jose bc jose had come into the club all cracked out and was coming around the counter of their illegal social club in the Bronx and hector could have sworn he saw jose reach into his jacket pocket as if to grab a gun.So hector acted quickly and pulled his gun out first and shot him. So my dad said oh that's all he said about hector that he loved him? Was he telling hector how much he loved him when he shot him two months prior to this incident in the chest? And his girlfriend just didn't want to talk anymore and asked if she could come down from the stand now. I remember the jury deliberated 7 days but hector was acquitted! So i was so interested in having a dad that could get me out of any trouble i got in so i grew up with a complete disregard to the law. Then me and my dad decided to get out of the bronx and move his practice more local more small time so he built his own office in Mount Vernon where we worked out of for 6 years. Doing general legal cases landlord & tenant, family court, dwis, probate court. bankruptcy, divorces/family court.. Then I left my dad's firm for my husband's firm who basically did the same thing as my dad all general types of law but mostly medical malpractice which included a lot more paperwork a lot more office appointments more communication with the clients because they weren't in jail. I found myself on the phone with insurance companies,. hospitals, searching for medical records and reviewing them. finding experts to review them. etc. Lastly, I worked for the controller of lower Westchester Anthony S. Colavita who was a real estate lawyer on the side of his political job. This was easy once you get to know how to do a closing your set for the rest of your life. It's just a certain set of papers that goes with each one. Another unique thing I did for this attorney was draft and e-file Incapacitated Person's financial advisors and the amount of money each person was being allotted to that specific year.
