Excellence in news: the news award recognizes outstanding achievement in any aspect of print and online journalism, from reporting and writing to photography, video, graphics and presentation. The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale, Illinois for their investigation of issues plaguing the city of Cairo, Illinois and the Alexander County Housing Authority. For more than three years, the newsroom published numerous stories and editorials outlining issues of mismanagement that led to families living in substandard and unsanitary conditions. As a result, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development acted earlier this year to address many of these issues. Molly Parker, Isaac Smith, Richard Sitler, Alee Quick, Les Winkeler, and Tom English contributed to the reporting.
