Shotcrete Supervisor

Edward’s Excavation
03.2019 - 08.2023

Oversaw and organized the day to day operation of shotcrete pool installations. I supervised, ran the controls and worked with between six to nine workers to construct high end custom concrete pools. Some of my main responsibilities included calculating and ordering the correct mix and amount of concrete, driving work truck/pump and arriving early to go over specifics and details with pool builders, contractors, home owners and concrete company. Determining access/setup was many times a challenge. We would many times be tasked with fixing forms, adjusting rebar, short stubbing pipes on the day of the shoot. Attention to detail (lights, returns, bubblers placement) and changes of design were expected daily. I was also tasked with keeping equipment (concrete pump, trucks, compressor) maintained and in good working order to avoid any loss of concrete or down time. Safety on our job site was of critical importance with all of the hazards that present themselves in this type of work. I would always make sure our crew had all of the tools and materials needed to do the job safely and efficiently. If there was ever a concrete question or anticipated problem, I would sometimes pre-site the job and advise as needed. To say the least, these four years were rigorous but rewarding with our crew completing close to 1,000 pools in the charlotte area. Some of our customers included NASCAR drivers, Carolina Panthers football players, and other elite families in the area such as the Belks. It is a comforting feeling to know that our crew always took pride in their work and worked together like a well oiled machine. We created a family type dynamic that proved to make for a safe, happy, and productive work environment.

  • CATS Blue Line Extension Project – Joint Venture
Hired as a lead form carpenter, I quickly learned that I would be involved with most every aspect of this project as a leader and that my job title did not limit my expectations. My first assignment was to assist drilling a couple hundred (3 ft diameter) shafts to various depths (8-20+ft) and setting H-pile in concrete to build a concrete panel sound wall. We then moved up the track to demolish half of Eastway Bridge to make room for the light rail. This bridge would be extended with a large pile panel retaining wall leading up to it. I graded and shot elevations from work points to establish elevations and measured to find locations. The project manager often had me operating heavy equipment such as Luhl forklifts, excavators, backhoes, off road dump trucks, skid steers, etc.) I was also tasked with operating the controls of the ICE Hammer to drive H pile using a huge hydraulic hammer attached to a crane that is powered by a diesel powerpack the size of a single car garage. Most of the days were not quite as dangerous as driving pile, but still required a strong back and mental toughness. Much of my time was spent assembling concrete forms, finishing concrete, setting anchor bolts, placing steel girders, preparing bridge decks for concrete, tightening bolts to specs, rigging and signaling cranes to move materials. We finished Eastway bridge with days to spare and avoided a $5,000 a day penalty. I then moved to 36th st. where we built a light rail bridge/station and then a freight rail bridge directly adjacent to it. The area eventually became a tunnel under two bridges which eliminated a RR crossing and itinitiated growth such as apartments, parking garages, retail stores and restaurants. For a few months in between task at 36th st I was asked to supervisee the artist that painted the bridges and architecture around 12th st. My main responsibility there was to keep the artist and citizens safe near the tracks and help them use 6-8 man and scissor lifts. After that I finished up my time with the project by helping to complete one of the largest push and bore drain culverts ever done on the east coast between 12th and 16th st in Charlotte. We started shoring for this months before any other work was started by driving sheet piles on each side of the track with the ice hammer. We hung whalers on the sheets to accommodate Williams rods which tied together the 96 ft of earth under the live freight track. This required many hours of diverting water and cutting / welding steel in a super dangerous environment.
