Work History

ORC- TEXAS ORGAN SHARING ALLIANCE
04.2020 - Current
  • I work as an organ recovery coordinator for an organ procurement organization here in central Texas
  • We serve hospitals in the Austin and surrounding areas as well as Waco,
  • Emple, San Angelo, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley area
  • Once a patient meets clinical triggers based on a certain set of criteria, doctors, or nurses call TOSA
  • I am then paged and will call the RN back to receive a report about the patients past medical history, current physical and neurological exam and any pending plans that the hospital or the family may have
  • If the hospital is going to proceed with brain death testing or the family decides that they want to withdraw care, I will be sent onsite to facilitate the brain death testing or may speak to the family about organ donation
  • Once consent for donation is obtained, or if the patient is a registered organ donor, I will continue to evaluate the patients’ organs to determine which are suitable for procurement or I will assume the role of donor management and take over care managing the patient
  • We typically have two organ recovery coordinators working each donation case so, I will work either as the coordinator allocating organs or managing the donor
  • If I am working allocation, I will run organ lists to find suitable recipients for those organs
  • I am responsible for finding the recipients, contacting the transplant coordinators and speaking to surgeons regarding the suitability of those organs for their patients
  • Once all the organs have been accepted, I coordinator an OR time and schedule the transportation for the transplant center surgeons and their team
  • I am responsible for coordinating the organ recovery operation and keeping meticulous documentation of the entire surgery, documenting anatomy, flushing, and packaging all the organs recovered and ensuring everything is accurate before the teams leave the operating room with their organ
  • Once all recovered organs have left the operating room and the surgery is complete, I make sure that the body is cleaned and transported either to the morgue or transported to the family’s choice of funeral home.

  • I was responsible for providing preoperative care as well as postoperative care of our cesarean section patients
  • I was also the primary circulating nurse in the OR when I accompanied my patients to surgery
