Teacher Intern

CHILDREN'S HEALTH COUNCIL
Palo Alto
06.2017 - 07.2017
  • At the Sand Hill School, we focus on children who have reached the 1st - 8th grade level and have dyslexia or other learning differences.
  • I have been part of this team which empowers students at a young age by focusing on learning style and making a comfortable learning experience for kids in order for them to love school again.
  • I have been made aware of the multitudes of learning differences and have seen how students who feel understood and safe, can really overcome learning obstacles.
  • I personally have been teaching reading to 3 different groups of different strengths and weaknesses, have been teaching performing arts in the 2nd half of the day, and lastly I have served as the P.E. teacher for the summer.
  • This opportunity ties in perfectly with my being a psychology major because not only is it providing an opportunity to apply what I have learned about child development so far, but it is also adding the new factor of learning which I hope to research more about as I learn about malnutrition and how that can change learning outcomes.
  • Not only am I lucky enough to work with kids, but with this opportunity I also get to incorporate some of my personal interest while given the space to try new things and observe the outcomes through the children.
  • I have also been learning a lot from the kids due to their strength, persistence, and outspokenness.
  • While gaining some new friends and also becoming a role model, I can see the reason to why I ended up at Sand Hill.
  • While at CHC I scan papers, take role, act as a nurse role, print out forms, communicate with parents, problem control, do one on one lessons with children on reading, create new and inclusive physical activities daily, and help any of the other interns or teachers whenever they need me.
  • I am very excited and have already been spoken to by various staff members about a future with Sand Hill at CHC.
  • I love these kids and would love watching them grow as students and young people for another summer.
