My first year at UMD was spent taking generals in the first semester, and I was in a treatment facility in the second semester. Overcoming my unhealthy relationship with food and substances is the biggest accomplishment. After I found more purpose I came back to UMD and changed the direction of my undergraduate studies to biochemistry. I was able to complete my second semester of being a biochemistry major with a 4.0.
In general chemistry II I participated in a CURE project given to the department by the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth. I had the opportunity to create and conduct my own protocols using biochar to adsorb heavy metals from aqueous solutions. During this research I learned a plethora about the research process. What was most important was the acceptance of failure, and the excitement that the next experiment holds.
Outside of school and work I love to tend to my plants, play video games, or use artist expression in forms of makeup, drawing, or painting. In Duluth there is also many beautiful places to hike where I also love to appreciate the plants. Plants are my main fascination in biochemistry.
