- The patient I provide care for is unable to communicate verbally or through sign language
- This has presented itself as a problem at times when he found himself in discomfort or pain, and was unable to readjust his position
- In these instances, I have taken the approach of asking him to signal to me with his eyes if I have correctly identified the problem
- Once identifying the problem, I then work to correct whatever may be wrong, such as him lying in an uncomfortable position, or dealing with back pain
- During one shift, the urine drainage bag detached from the catheter tube, causing spillage onto the floor
- At this point, I reattached the catheter tube to the bag, and cleaned the rug
- At times, it is necessary to empty the colostomy and urine bags, provide company, water and nutrition, and help address various problems as they occur.

- During one instance, a woman who had been exposed to COVID-19 refused to quarantine due to a lack of symptoms, despite her quarantine being a legal requirement
- To convince her to quarantine without escalating the call to a different department, I explained to her the potential consequences of her refusal on the community, should it turn out she tests positive for COVID-19
- Then, I asked her to imagine that she was potentially exposed by someone who knew they were potentially infectious but refused to quarantine, leading her to become seriously ill herself
- This approach led to her changing her mind, and acknowledging the need to quarantine
- After this conversation, I proceeded to go through the standard scripts, explaining the need to monitor symptoms, inform of a periodic follow up (and ask by which means we should follow up), and ensure she had the necessary resources to carry out her quarantine
- I had a nurse who was in full panic mode due to me informing her of the exposure to COVID-19 that she recently had
- I took it upon myself to reassure and tell this person that everything was going to be okay, that most of my calls were not to people who ultimately were infected, despite their exposure, and reminded her that she most likely was not infected, given that she was prudent about wearing her mask and social distancing where possible
- Also, I would be in daily communication with her to ensure that her needs were met, and to check up on any possible symptoms that may have developed
- This contact ultimately executed her quarantine period without issues.
