  • I am part of my Church Youth Dance Group, where we perform at all events held by the church! It is an honor to dance and show my love and devotion to God!
  • One of the biggest events of the dance group is the Vacation Bible School (VBS) Summer Camp, where we perform different choreographies for all five days of the week. This opportunity also allows us to include little kids in the dances, mentoring/ teaching them the dances weeks prior.

  • I was able to shadow and work alongside the residents. We went through the residents' morning and afternoon rounds as well as oversaw their morning meetings where they would discuss their patients with Dr Frontela. alongside shadowing regular bedside manners I was able to oversee small procedures within the ICU.

  • Through The Summer Research Internship (SRI), we were added to a lab and conducted a mini-research project within the 10 weeks of the internship. I was working under Dr. Joshua Hutcheson in the Cardiovascular Matrix Remodeling Laboratory, my project revolved around the effect of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMC) with a CAV1 knockdown, in combination with Meta Beta Cyclodextrin (MBCD), in controlled and osteogenic media would have on the calcification of VSMCs.
  • In SRI we also had Journal Club Meetings every week where we learned the ins and outs of scientific literature. We also had segments based on scientific Case Studies where we learned about the ethics in science.

  • Quantifying Biology in the Classroom QBIC is a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences track for exceptional students who want a more in-depth, interdisciplinary approach to studying, understanding, and conducting research in the biological sciences.

  • Within the Cardio Matrix Remodeling Lab (CMRL) I work under PI Dr Joshua D. Hutchenson and PhD student Katherine Keiser.
  • My project consists of density gradients and CAV1 trafficking. This would include growing VSMCs and HOBs in different treatment groups. Then you would lyse the cells and learn how to make/ run density gradients. Lastly, the fractions of the density gradients need to be western blotted to see how the treatments change the CAV1 location.

Accomplishments

  • 2023 - Second place at the Florida International University Summer Research Internship Symposium, funded by the Florida Heart Research Institute!
    Our project was titled “Investigating The Role of Caveolin 1 in Vascular Calcification” and was based on trying to measure the effect that knockdown of the Caveolin 1 (CAV1) protein in combination with the Methyl Beta-Cyclodextrin (mBCD) treatment would have on the calcification of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).
  • 2023 - Bronze Civic Action Award. The Miami Dade College Civic Action Award recognizes those who have actively engaged in the civic life of our community by completing actions that contribute to the common good.
