Work History

Isolation Coordinator

Virginia Beach SPCA
02.2014 - 09.2018
  • Created SOPs for all isolation areas in the shelter. From the order in which you put on/take off hazmat gear to the sanitation of enclosures to minimize the chance of cross- contamination. All policies were reviewed and approved by our head veterinarian.
  • Managed a foster program that I worked with directly. They were trained to care for kittens and puppies that require extra care due to age/illness and how to recognize signs of potential illnesses.
  • Worked alongside vet staff and designed treatment plans for parasites, upper respiratory illnesses, calici, parvo, etc. These were also signed off on by our head vet.
  • Increased adoption rates by coordinating the transfer of animals from rural shelters and rescue organizations with fewer resources. Especially younger animals that required isolation from the general population until determined to be healthy and sufficiently vaccinated.
  • Coordinated cross-functional teams, resulting in healthy animals making it to the adoption floor and out the door as soon as possible.

Wildlife Technician

Virginia Beach SPCA
01.2014 - 09.2018
  • Counseled members of the public who brought in wildlife. Collected data concerning the animal's condition and location.
  • Determined if treatment was a realistic option depending on the level of care required, the potential stress on the animal during the recovery period, and conducted the appropriate triage. Or performed humane euthanasia when determined to be the best option.
  • Worked with a wildlife veterinarian who was at our facility a few days a week or coordinated with several local vets in the area that dealt with specific wildlife and the transport of said animals to the facilities.
  • Coordinated with our licensed rehabbers what animals they could accomaccommodate and arranged transport for those animals.
  • Some animals we rehabbed in house. We had a large outdoor aviary and enclosed outdoor housing area for reintroduction of small mammals.
  • Animals requiring constant care, eg frequent feeding, dressing of bandages, constant monitoring, came home with me regularly.
  • Went on wildlife rescue calls at personal residences and large scale rescues such as the jet fuel spill in Chesapeake in 2016.
  • Recorded and reported all incidents in keeping with Virginia state regulations and national regulations.

Lead Kennel Technician

Virginia Beach SPCA
01.2012 - 02.2014
  • Enhanced animal care by implementing updated protocols and procedures for the kennel facility.
  • Reduced illness outbreaks among animals by maintaining strict sanitation standards in all kennel areas.
  • Ensured timely vaccinations and medical treatments for all animals, improving overall health and wellness.
  • Streamlined feeding schedules to ensure consistency in providing balanced nutrition to each animal.
  • Coached staff on how to develop relationships with potential adopters and stressed the focus on pet retention starting with the adoption process. Transparency and coaching potential adopters on medical or behavioral challenges they may face with an individual animal.
  • Conducted behavioral assessments on incoming animals as well as animals in-house that the general staff were not comfortable handling.
  • Worked with fractious animals that were housed in quieter back areas of the facility who needed extra time to acclimate before being put on the adoption floor.
