An employee in this class supervises the employees and activities of a patrol shift. The employee responsible for a shift serves as a working supervisor in performing similar work as the subordinates and also serves in a troubleshooting, advisory and supervisory capacity. Work requires the employee to plan work activities over a short period of time, organize and assign the daily work function in an effective and efficient manner, and ensure it is completed while adhering to the Office policies and procedures. The employee must exercise judgment and discretion in assigning or performing work and advising officers in the correct approach to assignments and/or in dealing with defendants, lawyers, plaintiffs, and the general public. Work involves frequent public contact that requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Effectively restrain an inmate, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting inmates and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved devices in self-defense.
Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Also file, alphabetize and label reports.
