Lead the Violin Section:
Guided the first violin section musically and technically during rehearsals and performances.
Helped maintain intonation, timing, and expression across the section.
Serve as a Liaison Between the Conductor and Musicians:
Communicated conductor instructions to the string section.
Set the tone for rehearsal etiquette and ensemble professionalism.
Play All Solos and Cues:
Performed exposed violin solos in orchestral works.
Took musical cues and served as the visual leader for bowing changes and entrances.
Determine Bowings with the Section and Orchestra:
Worked with conductors and other section leaders to finalize consistent bowings for the strings.
Ensured that all players in the violin section were aligned musically and stylistically.
Support Younger or Less Experienced Players:
Provided informal coaching or assistance during sectional rehearsals or before performances.
Helped newer members integrate into the group and feel comfortable with the repertoire.
Tune the Orchestra:
Traditionally, the concertmistress tunes the orchestra before rehearsals and performances by leading the tuning A from the oboe or tuning device.
Represent the Orchestra Publicly:
Sometimes represented ICYOLA at events, photoshoots, or community concerts as a key figure in the ensemble.
