Support technician

SpaceX
Brownsville
02.2020 - 11.2020
  • As a Support Tech I was introduced to the welding and work environment.
  • I was taught about hazards, possible dangers and how to mitigate risk by having common sense and learning proper risk identification through training on multiple subjects such as gas line identity (Air, Argon, Oxygen, Acetylene, Nitrogen, Methane, Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen), electrical line and wire identity, confined space safety, workplace tractor and forklift operations and how to not get run down, material knowledge and the integrity of any material we use, PPE training and when to use it, lift operations involving high capacity forklifts, cranes and boom lifts, proper weldments fit up, welding parameters for various welding machines setup for 301, 304, 308 and 309 stainless steel as well as how to weld dissimilar metals, how to set up work orders, ordering parts from the machine shop, safety around high power electricity, safety around welding machines (TIG, SMAW, FCAW, IR-class 4 laser), safety around hazardous waste (Sharp metal waste, chemical waste, toxic elements), identifying hazards when around manlifts and scissor lifts.
  • I was also trained how to work with engineers, welders, seasoned technicians, machinists, security and management.

Welder/Structures/Tooling technician

SpaceX
Brownsville
02.2020 - 11.2020
  • As a Structures/Tooling/Welder tech I learned most of my skills as a starship welder and as a Tooling tech.
  • I was taught how to operate a precision laser leveling system, how to fit up very large carbon steel parts to assemble a ring trolley powered by hydraulics.
  • My mentors showed me where to check out tools and how to fabricate massive structures.
  • I spent most of my time welding for the engineers and creating their parts.
  • I would be asked to weld crucial hardware on the side of our rockets and also learned my way around the rocket.
  • Usually if I was not welding or helping my team, I would be catching up on hot jobs my supervisor's boss had for me, which ranged from welding carbon steel parts to a 309 stainless steel base, to assembling a giant resistance welding machine.
  • In my time in this department I also was certified to weld carbon steel for the company as well as being certified for handling hazardous waste like metals, chemicals and toxic material.
  • I was certified on corrosion control, machinist safety training, confined space training, electrician safety courses and hot work training to name a few.

Welder Level II/III

SpaceX
Brownsville
02.2020 - 11.2020
  • As a Welder II/III I undertook more responsibilities.
  • I was certified to work on the rocket directly using TIG and I had a chance to learn how to weld parts of the rocket with high powered lasers and Plasma-TIG processes.
  • I was trained to repair failed welds by prior weld teams, how to identify what QC codes mean, how to identify bad welds or any oddities when inspecting the rocket.
  • I worked with seasoned welders, upper management, the weld development department, quality inspectors, starship welders, facilities, and my previous team to tackle any problems or bugs that we had with any system we used.
  • I worked closely with a team of fabricators that handle the creation of the rocket's hull.
  • In my time in this department I learned how to handle high risk weldments and I learned proper safety when it came to welding high up (200ft +).
