· Lead analyst for pyrogen testing
Conduct GLP and cGMP experiments under specific IACUC guidelines and test protocol
Create a testing schedule. Select and prepare animals for sham tests. Perform the sham test. Preparation of test article extraction and dilutions. Calculate, prepare, and administer doses. Place rectal probes in rabbits. Monitor and record rabbits’ temperature during the procedure.
Euthanize rabbits after completing the experiment. Complete and review raw data and report results to the study director.
Other responsibilities:
Calibrate equipment, depyrogenate glassware, prepare the testing room before the experiment, and clean after. Socialize, weigh, move, and restrain rabbits.
· Lead analyst for Intramuscular Implant studies
Conduct GLP and cGMP experiments under specific IACUC guidelines and test protocol.
Aseptically cut, load into needles, disinfect, or autoclave test and control samples. Calculate anesthesia doses and help the veterinarian prepare the anesthesia cocktail.
Select rabbits and clip back hair before testing. Prepare a testing room.
Administer intravenously and intramuscular anesthesia doses in rabbits. Aseptically scrub the test area.
Put on sterile globes and set up sterile testing tools, control, and test samples.
Inject test and control samples on rabbits' back muscles.
Monitor rabbits’ vitals under anesthesia during and after implantation and bring them back to cages when completely awake.
Give rabbits pain medication after the procedure and post-implantation. Perform daily observation and look for clinical signs of discomfort or signs of infection on implant sites.
Euthanize rabbits at the end of the study, recover implants, and score implant sites. Collect tissues, place them in formalin, label, and pack them to be sent out to the histology lab.
Complete and review raw data and report results to the study director.
· Support analyst for specialized studies
Support study director revising study protocols; understand procedures, timelines, test article handling, and preparation.
Studies performed in rabbits:
Selecting animals for studies and preparing them for the procedure.
Support during test article preparation and participate during procedure according to study.
Prepare, clean, and autoclave surgery tools, and set up oxygen tank and isoflurane. Prepare surgery suit according to the procedure.
Prepare animals for surgery, clip hair on the surgery site, calculate anesthesia doses, and help veterinarians prepare anesthesia cocktails. Calculate and prepare pain medication doses.
Anesthetize animals and aseptically scrub the surgery site, give them pain medication after and post-surgery.
Monitor animals until they are completely recovered from anesthesia and bring them back to cages.
Perform daily observations and weekly blood collection until the end of the study.
Recover the test article at the end of the study, collect tissue surrounding it, and record observations.
Place tissue in formalin, label, and pack containers to be sent out to the histology lab.
Studies performed in rats:
Monitor animals after test article administration, contemporaneously record data and clinical signs of discomfort, and euthanize animals according to the humane endpoints under the regulations of IACUC.
· Veterinary Assistant
Coordinate rabbit socialization team. Member of the enrichment committee, responsible for providing edible and environmental enrichment to animals in the vivarium. Ensure that other members properly and consistently provide and document enrichment. Vivarium checks to ensure animal husbandry is practiced by Pacific Biolabs, USDA, and IACUC regulations. Report to veterinarians and study directors if an animal appears sick or animal welfare-related concerns.
Fill out veterinary service reports and apply treatments to animals. Support veterinarians training staff to properly apply treatments. First responders during animal emergencies if veterinarians were not on-site giving detailed descriptions of animal conditions and providing treatment or performing humane euthanasia.
Monthly and quarterly blood and feces collection of room sentinels.
Revise and file animal health certificates. Receive and store non-control veterinary drugs.
Advocate for animals collectively working with veterinarians to improve their life conditions, training staff on proper animal handling, and in some cases advocate for early termination of studies due to unexpected results that would cause unnecessary stress or pain in animals.
