Research Assistant

  • Biomaterials and Interface Tissue Engineering Lab (BITEL) at Columbia University
  • Designed a gelatin-based hydrogel to mimic gingival tissue and study how bacteria interact with fibroblast-infused hydrogels (biofilm formation, degradation, and cell viability)
  • Created and fine-tuned an artificial saliva solution by testing growth media (BHI, LB) to find the lowest nutrient concentration that still supported bacterial growth
  • Crosslinked gelatin with microbial transglutaminase (Tgase) and confirmed that NaOH alone wasn’t enough for stable gelation
  • Made electrospun tissue scaffolds seeded with bacteria and combined them with the artificial saliva and hydrogels to model realistic oral conditions for bacteria-fibroblast assays
