On the fifth Sunday of the month, some folks from my church and I travel to First English Lutheran Church in a heavily impoverished and crime-infested place in downtown Columbus, Ohio, to serve meals. First we bring all the food into the church, interacting with the folks who are already waiting for meals. Then we pack 150 bags of food to pass out, giving whatever is left to the homeless shelter (which is generally a lot). With the bags we also serve plates of hot food. Some of us cook (definitely not me) and the others, including me, help serve the hot meals, pass out the bags, and manage stock. Since I am generally the youngest one there, they refer to me as "the runner," as I make sure the food is flowing (generally entails me running back and forth to retrieve things). Next comes the amazing part. Unlike every other church who helps, so we have been told, we stay to join their Bible study and worship service.
Every week I lead our Bible Study discussion. I try my best to create handouts of the material we will cover, discussion questions, and interpretive methods. On the first Sunday of every month, I write a small essay answering a biblical or apologetic question. I'll answer something like, 'Why Would a Good God Send People to Hell?' or 'Is There Scientific Evidence for God's Existence?'
I feel called to participate in additional ministries with the homeless and with prison ministries.
