Doorkeepers are temporary employees and hired each year to serve during the session only. Individuals who have served as a doorkeeper during the previous session may be invited to return for a subsequent session. Doorkeepers assist the Sergeant at Arms in maintaining order and decorum in the Senate Chamber, in the Senate Anterooms and in the Senate Gallery. Doorkeepers perform a variety of other tasks in support of the Senate and its members. Doorkeepers come into contact with a wide range of people including legislators, staff, the press, lobbyists, advocacy groups and the general public. As a representative of the Senate, Doorkeepers are expected to maintain a pleasant but firm demeanor and show respect for everyone. Doorkeepers perform an important security function by allowing only authorized person onto the floor of the Senate Chamber during session.
