Special education teachers have many responsibilities, including teaching and mentoring students one-on-one. They may also work with paraprofessionals, such as special education aides, to help students succeed. Here are some of the responsibilities of special education teachers and paraprofessionals:

• Create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs)Special education teachers create documents that outline each student's learning goals, accommodations, and support services. They may also update IEPs throughout the year to reflect students' progress.
• Assess students special education teachers evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health. They also conduct regular assessments to determine if students are meeting their academic goals.
• Adapt lessons and materials special education teachers use differentiation and modification techniques to tailor lesson plans and materials to meet the needs of each student. They may also help students adapt materials to suit their individual learning styles.
• Provide specialized instruction special education teachers provide instruction to students with disabilities, such as learning, physical, emotional, or behavioral impairments.
• Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment special education teachers establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among students.

Special education teachers work with students who have different abilities than their peers, such as physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities. Their responsibilities include:
