The sergeant is a first line supervisor who directly supervises custody officers, (E-9 and E10). He/she has a considerable direct prisoner contact and is often called upon to mediate conflicts between staff and prisoners. He/she may be assigned to the yard, arsenal, administrative segregation/detention, Level IV housing units, or Control Center. A sergeant must be knowledgeable in and implement all polices and operating procedures related to assigned positions. They must give direct instructions to and assist in the development of officers under their supervision in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, prisoners and visitors at the facility.
In my previous experience within the prison system, I have been a part of Security Threat Group (gang) team to identify and monitor gang activity within the prison system. I have been a part of several drug busts in the visiting room inside the prison by monitoring live camera footage and watching movements of both prisoner and visitor. At the direction of inspectors, as a supervisor, I have put together several teams to enter housing units in search of cell phones. I constantly monitor camera footage within the prison, JPAY (email) messages being sent by/to prisoners, phone calls being made from the prison to help intercept drugs/contraband from entering the facility.
