Staff Sergeant Emilio Luna distinguished himself by meritorious service as MC-130 Dedicated Crew Chief, 353d
Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 353d Special Operations Wing, Kadena Air Base, Japan.
During this period, Sergeant Luna tapped his Multi-Capable Airmanship during a typhoon evacuation. He teamed
with electricians to rectify an engine fire indication, thus restoring the wing’s commitment to the mission and
continuity of operations away from home-station. Additionally, Sergeant Luna leveraged his various expert
mechanic skills and repaired a faulty hydraulic system. He swiftly replaced a leaking flight control component,
enabling a vital MV-22 air-to-air refuel mission that supported the Marines and future freedom of navigation
missions. Furthermore, Sergeant Luna tackled the highest MC-130J over-G condition in history. He led the safety
investigation maintenance team, replaced fifty-eight panels and two flight controls throughout 720 man-hours,
enabling the aircraft’s return to the rapid response mission. Finally, Sergeant Luna showcased his maintenance
expertise to the Major Command’s Inspector General team. He adeptly passed four evaluations and was presented
the Quality Assurance Outstanding Performer award. The culmination of his efforts earned him the unit’s 2022
Dedicated Crew Chief of the Year and the wing’s “Batcat of the Week” and Team of the Quarter awards. The
distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Luna reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
