Provided supervision, care and correctional treatment of inmates and guidance to lower-graded Correctional Officers. Incumbent is concerned with maintenance of institution security contributing to the health and welfare of the inmates and the promotion of good public relations.
Enforced rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried out and inmates remain in custody. From time to time, I may be authorized to carry firearms and to use physical force, including deadly force, to maintain control of inmates.
During institution emergencies or other periods of heavy workload or limited staff, i have worked long and irregular hours, unusual shifts, Sundays, holidays and unexpected overtime. Information as to operations and procedures is provided by post orders, BOP program statements, local supplements, custodial manual, internal correspondence and staff meetings. Incumbent must be flexible and have a broad knowledge base to use own initiative in the resolution of problem situations.
Able to enforce rules and direct inmate activities throughout the institution without causing disruption. Possess the ability to converse with individuals in such a manner to ensure understanding of the audience, and to ensure conformance with applicable rules and regulations.
I have resolved a physical altercation between inmates using verbal communication skills/verbal judo. Have presented safety lectures or orientations to new inmates. Have informed unit teams regarding the work or personal habits of inmates. Have deactivated/diffused a potentially hostile situation by using calm dialogue/persuasive communication skills.
Able to pay attention to detail while employed in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Able to recognize signs of discord, such as tension among known adversaries, or abnormal behavior, such as giving personal items away in order to diffuse, report or thwart potential serious situations.
