Overview

Work History

CCFRP Field Technician

Semmens Lab - Scripps Institution of Oceanography
2024.04 - Current

- Attended field research fishing trips to monitor Marine Protected Area (MPA) performance.

- Measured the fork length, identified the fish, and gave each fish a condition code in order to obtain accurate data.

- Maneuvered the descending rod that lowered fish down to their original depth.

- Handled fish properly from angler until the fish was descended into the water.

- Recorded essential data for each fish while also recording latitude, longitude, relief, and condition in order to understand performance.

- Dissected retained fish from each fishing trip in order to identify its sex, remove otoliths, and weigh the liver and gonads.

DDT Lab Assistant

Semmens Lab - Scripps Institution of Oceanography
2024.04 - Current

- Dissected fish for otoliths, gonads, livers, stomachs, and muscle tissue.

- Mounted otoliths in order to take high quality pictures so their otolith rings could be counted.

- Practiced counting otolith rings in order to determine the age of each fish.

- Prepared stable isotope analysis using a freeze dryer and careful measurements of dried tissue samples.

- Blended and measured out proper samples of fish tissues with an equal part of DI water in order to send samples out for analysis.

- Dissected very small Myctophids underneath a microscope for muscle tissue and stomach.

- Visited NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center and their sample collection in order to gather Myctophid samples for dissection.
