Dryer Operator, Utility, Dye House Operator, LTO,

Shaw industries Inc.
Dalton, GA
08.2017 - 06.2022

I've worked for all down the line in plant 81, Dye house department. From Inspector, Dye head operator, Dryer operator, LTO - pole hyster, fork lift hyster, pallet jack operator & a brief cherry hyster driver, sew- on operator, & utility.

  • As a sew-on operator, This job duty requires a lot of team work operating a folding & sewing machine. It begins with putting down the rolls while ensuring they’re in their corresponding placement with the shop order given, while also being able to effectively communicate with my coworkers just in case something were to happen, this job works around a quicker pace so quickly problem solving is something I’ve gotten better at while working in this position. Although incidents do occur
  • Example:
  • Roll edges get stuck on the conveyor belt
  • Number mix up
  • Wrong roll placement
  • Or a Missing roll there’s always a solution to any situation but before we take matters our own hand we do notify the supervisor before we proceed with action. Because it’s very important to ensure whatever action is taken is the best option. Sew-on is the beginning of the line so whatever situation occurs it'll affect every station differently down the line.
  • For example:
  • Say an associate had forgotten to put tape on a last run, well that tape travels down the line & what the tape does for CDR is help the dye-head & Dryer operator know when the next change over is. Changing to color of the carpet/ chemicals that go onto the carpet.
  • Overall it’s better to know ahead of time to let the other operators know.
  • Maintained compliance with safety standards to protect myself and coworkers.
  • As a Dryer Operator, which was possibly my favorite job while learning the whole line. This specific job required a lot of multitasking, I honestly loved it. But, I moved because I wanted to continue to learn the other jobs within the department.
  • My duties in this position required operating/run the SST so the carpet will be properly treated through the line by monitoring the main control panel.
  • I had to check the pH levels three times a day every two hours. while also including the time, which side applicator was use, & the chemicals for the specific style.
  • Monitored carpet pinning before dryer entry to ensure correct stretching.
  • My main control panel included dryer (heat settings) , extractors (my vacuums), myevery roll and/ or width monitor the washer is an extractor
  • And monitoring the post steamer & to be sure the wash bars were correct.
  • I was also in communication with sew-on, dye head operator, the inspector clerk, & if there was any issues with quality there was quick access to speak to the lead or supervisor.
  • I also would check bow and skew after every roll of a new style/change over to make sure it looks correct.
  • The job also required me to do :
  • Getting inside a steamer
  • Wiping down applicator blade
  • Make sure to flush both A&B with water
  • Keep my work station cleaned
  • Changing chemical totes
  • Bag up test patches for the bailer
  • Remove lint & string from inside the steamer
  • Wash all rollers & walls inside steamer.
  • Rinse pans with water remove all in strings on steamer rollers and catch pans
  • Check all roller pins if missing or bents
  • Check inside Kleissner for kinked or leaky lines
  • Cleaning water reclaims & chemical filters.
  • Visually inspect tubes for color & build up
  • Forklift certified
  • Operated high pressure and Water while cleaning the sst blade/ washing down.
  • Handled heavy materials weighing up to 50 pounds to assist in workflow.
  • Now As a Utility, Having a job as utility gave me the ability to learn all the other jobs and allow me to help others whenever they needed it. I was mainly in a station to give breaks, if not giving breaks I’ll be doing scrap at the Baylor or learning dye ware.
  • It also required if someone were to call in sick I would be available to fill in that position for that time being. Because of this job I was able to learn inspection clerk,Dye head operator, & I was also able to learn how to drive a pole hyster, scan rolls, and put them on the shelves.
  • And ultimately As a Dye House operator, I had to make sure that all styles and colors matched up to every roll and kept track with every footage of every single run to be sure that I do not change over too early or too late while carpet was in the color dyeing process. I had to monitor my percentage of dye that was flowing to make sure it was at a specific target, I had to check my width and be sure it matched up with my carpet length, this job is similar to the dryer.
