Medical Technologist

Central Texas Veterans Health Care System
04.2010 - Current

Medical Technologist working as a generalist in the laboratory which includes a Level 3 Bio lab and molecular laboratory. I have been responsible the last 15 years for the startup and maintenance of the instruments at the beginning of the shift. I have knowledge of profession laboratory practices by operating theses machines on a daily basis. Making sure that maintenance is done correctly and in a time manner. I also have knowledge of practices and concepts that support independent work by by being a team player and teaching and learning from other technologists in the laboratory. As an experienced technologist we work along on Saturdays doing several hundred specimens. Without being able to work independently this would not be able to be accomplished alone. I have in depth knowledge of laboratory quality control as I am responsible for running the quality control material all instruments at the beginning of the shift. I am knowledgeable in watching for shifts and trends and what to do to when these events occur. I am also very knowledgeable in quality assurance programs in the laboratory. Our teams makes great efforts to collect and record data to include turn around times, calling providers within an acceptable time for critical laboratory values, documenting mislabeled specimens. All of these factor into improving performance of myself and other technologists in the laboratory. I have knowledge in the informatics systems, data flow and laboratory processes. I am very familiar with the data flow of our computer systems in the lab, I am knowledgeable to seeing erroneous results before they are transmitted over into the hospital wide computer systems. I am knowledgeable in going back and looking up information in the informatics system as well I have the ability to maintain, repair and troubleshoot instrumentation in the laboratory. Every day, week, month, two months and six months there are routine maintenance operations to be done. This task is rotated to all of the technologists and it is part of our annual competency to correctly perform each task without difficulty. I have the ability to use independent technical judgement to analyze and interpret laboratory results. I review each and every result that comes off an instrument to make sure there is nothing erroneous being reported. I am the only person in one department and it is up to me to make sure I am putting our the best and most accurate results. I have the ability to read, interpret and apply complex written instructions. I am a very hands on technologist and will read and reread any instructions before completing the task at hand. A lot of times I have to read written instructions on how to run CAP surveys, how to reconstitute reagents, and how to make up reagents for specific instruments. There are also very detailed written instructions on how to perform maintenance on all the equipment in the laboratory. I have the ability to communicate , consult, and interact with other members of my team, external relations, customer service and patient education. I communicate on a daily basis with my team members. Passing along critical information regarding machines, critical patients and outlying quality control. I have the ability to communicate with external relations such as reference laboratories, nurses, doctors and other clinicians and even communicate very kindly with the veterans. I have the ability to communicate with customer service when having to call in for problems with an instrument and do trouble shooting over the phone. Along with being a generalist in the laboratory, I am also specialized in the Level 3 Laboratory. This incudes testing for acid fast bacilli to include Mycobacterium tuberculosis. I am also specialized in mycology testing and identifying fungus which in only done at our facility in the central Texas region. I am also specialized in molecular testing to include viral loads and sexually transmitted diseases again which is only done in my lab in the central Texas region.
