I started culminating my excellent customer service at the age of 6. My family farmed and my siblings and I were given the task of selling sweet corn off an old kitchen table at the end of our driveway. As years went on, customers began asking for other vegetables and our mom was able to supply some from our large garden behind our house. Mom and Dad evolved their budding business by building makeshift greenhouses, starting vegetable plants from seed, planting in black plastic with drip tape, and expanding the vegetables we offered. All of us, kids included, were required to participate. Our small operation from the old kitchen table was updated to a vegetable stand and eventually the driveway was too small, so the stand was moved across the street to our farm. I was painfully shy so Dad would insist that I would be the one to watch the vegetable stand if we needed to pick produce a second time during the day. I became quite good at it. Customers enjoyed my calm and kind demeanor and I found satisfaction in helping people find what they needed. By the time I was a teenager, the business had expanded to include selling plants and flowers in the spring, vegetables and sweet corn in the summer, and pumpkins,squash and gourds in the fall with a small petting zoo of young farm animals. Not too many years ago, the business had to close due to Dad's age and his difficulty getting on the tractor. I'm bringing all of this up because I know what hard work is, nobody my age has the customer service experience that I do, and I fully understand the dedication it takes to run a family business.
