Jianna Rivas

In Ethics club, we are given 16 scenarios which we must apply ethical theories to, and create a solution to the problems. This club allowed me to expand my knowledge on what's right and wrong, while taking into account multiple perspectives. It has also taught me how to work well with others and communicate effectively even with diverse opinions. Additionally, due to my efforts in this club, I have also been elected for club president next year.

This club focuses on the application of scientific knowledge to crime. Throughout the club we have practiced different forensic skills like finger printing and strawberry DNA extraction. This club is important to me because I'm intrigued by scientific research. Due to my persistent efforts in this club, I have been elected club president next year.

The "Tribe Earth" club at East Lake is dedicated to helping keep the environment clean. We are associated with Keep Pinellas Beautiful and join them on cleanups on beaches, parks and more. This club helps me to give back to my community and teaches me to work hard. I am passionate about this club because learning about the environment, and how to help maintain it has always interested me.

The AP Capstone course is a program where students are given the opportunity to conduct professional research. Through the two classes, AP Seminar and AP Research I have gained experience in reasoning, collaboration and public speaking skills. With my AP Research project, I was able to utilize my schools scientific lab equipment to conduct my experiment.

While creating the Yearbook for our school I have learned a lot about effective communication with all types of people. I have worked with students of all grades, and was even given the opportunity to work on a few pages involving teachers and parents. This has taught me how to collaborate in a professional way.
