Key Classes

STEM-Ed 101

  • This class provided the opportunity to go into elementary school classrooms, where we were able to observe teaching styles.
  • Executed a STEM (specifically physics) based lesson plan in a fifth grade classroom.
  • Designed a lesson plan for a second STEM (specifically engineering) based lesson for the same classroom.

Vertically integrated projects

  • I was involved with two vertically integrated projects, where I received credit for participation in research. Both VIPs had a focus on becoming familiar with computer languages and programming. I had the opportunity to review code being used for multiple projects being worked on by Boise State University, including the Genomes Underlying Toxin Tolerance (GUTT) project.

Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy

  • General knowledge of the anatomy and natural history of vertebrate species. Knowledge of the evolutionary history of vertebrates and of how the body systems differ between different classes.
  • Experience dissecting vertebrates across different classes, including a lamprey, shark, and cat. This comes with the identification of muscles, arteries, veins, and organs across different classes.

Ornithology

  • Identification of over 100 different species of birds and nearly 50 bird calls.
  • Early morning fieldwork with the identification of birds during class time, including during winter months.
  • Ability to dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Knowledge of basic bird anatomy and physiology, as well as different mating strategies, migratory mechanisms and patterns, and behavioral strategies for survival.

Mammalogy

  • Research experience in the field for a project assessing responses of ground squirrel populations to long-term habitat changes in the Sagebrush Steppe. Field work included participation in a long-term, mark-recapture of Piute ground squirrels at 6 sites using a trapping web design. Trapping days included opening traps early morning and checking them every 1 to 1.5 hrs until mid to late-afternoon.

Drone Flight Planning and Operations

  • Research experience involving seedling success surveys in a sage-brush steppe environment. Manual surveys of the area to look at the success of bitterbrush and sagebrush seedlings along walking and biking trails.
  • Assisted in set up of TopCon base and rover for GPS data collection, and flew pre planned flight path using MapPilot pro.
  • Created Dense Point Cloud, DEM, and Orthomosaic using Agisoft metashape, and then analyzed the data in R.
