Food Runner

  • As a food runner at Claim Jumper our job was to complete side work and whenever food showed up in the window we’d find which table to take it to and run it across the restaurant. When it came to running food at Claim Jumper we had to carry large trays with up to 7-8 items on them.
  • When it came to our job priorities that came second to running food, we would aid servers with condiments, items, refills, and orders. We would also focus on our side work when we didn’t have to deal with any requests (The kitchen relied on it for plating food trays with food paper or for remaking ketchups for plating).
  • In this job I finally learned how to close in a restaurant. In our closing we had up to 10 closing steps (wiping and papering metal food trays, remaking ketchups for the next day, refilling ranch tubs, wiping down the counter tops, washing and putting away all ceramics/glassware, putting away the nacho cheese and marinara, etc).
  • Like any other job that comes with customer service we have to stay professional with customers and show them respect and understanding. Whenever a customer is upset I communicate thoroughly but short on what they need and how I can get it for them. If a manager is needed, I’ll mention how I can help.

Busser/Food Runner

  • As a Busser our main job was to get tables ready through our bussing/resetting tables process that involves duties from pre-bussing empty dishes from tables in a bus bin, picking up trash and throwing it away in a trash/recycling bin, cleaning the rest of the tables dishes off into the bus bin, to wiping the table down with a sanitized rag or setting it back up with fresh menus and table settings. On top of our Busser duties we had to aid servers in table service by either refilling water cups and picking up extra trash, or by asking customers if they need anything else.
  • When it comes to bussing I make sure to check out the details like when we’re free, we’ll pick up random trash, tidy stations, or refill random items that are in priority.
  • As a food runner at Shin-sen-gumi we had to communicate with our cooks on the timing of orders, as well as to remind them if we had any allergies or item changes. We also had the job of running the window which included, crossing off completed items, circling unfinished ones, and inspecting the food to make sure that everything is prepared according to the ticket and without any hazards. Once all of the dishes are ran out to the correct tables, we had to go back to the window and recycle the tickets once all the food was served. After we had time, we move onto our next prioritized task. While multitasking bussing, side tasks, and customer service.
  • Whenever we have complaints from customers we make sure to satisfy their needs whether it be a simple action for the request of a customer or if it’s a question they’d like to ask a manager. In issues of an upset customer I make sure to be as professional and compassionate as possible while communicating with them clearly about what they need and how I can get it for them.
